History of New York Reading List
Once I’m done with this spring’s LBJ Caropalooza — I’m finishing Robert Caro’s Master of the Senate and moving on to Passage of Power immedately after, all told a 1,900 page marathon — I’m thinking of pivoting to a quick survey of well-written books on New York City’s history. Here’s a first stab at it. What am I missing?

To Kill a Mockingbird
Eighth graders in Norwood N.J. asked people to write in their memories about reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Here’s what I wrote.
Hi Norwood Students,
I read To Kill a Mockingbird when I was in ninth grade. That was almost 30 years ago, but I remember it very well. I still think of Atticus Finch a lot and try to live decently and treat people like people and to work for social justice. I...

May the Best Times Win
My hastily compiled (read, thrown together), un-fact-checked, pointless list of newspapers called (or sorta called) The Times, in order of circulation. In places where circ is higher on Sunday I picked the higher number.

Journalitics and News Applications
Wendell Cochran’s written a blog post at his Investigative Reporting Workshop site laying out his observations about news applications, which by his lights should really be called “journalitics.” The post is worth a read, and lays out some strong observations and useful historical background on CAR’s roots.
I have beef with the word ‘journalitics,’ at least if...

My Instapaper Wish List
In honor of Marco leaving Tumblr to focus on Instapaper full-time, here’s my very brief, publisher-focused wish list for Instapaper.
The ability to get bylines to show up reliably on stories we’ve published.
Some way to present content specifically to Instapaper readers, like related articles, etc.
Community text parser configuration, which may in fact give us 1 & 2.

In fairness, it’s probably just that delivering cigarettes by mail is illegal. Shrug. What do I know.

Me on Paul Graham on Yahoo
Paul Graham, Y Combinator partner and “essayist,” blames Yahoo’s problems on trying to be a media company and not having a sufficiently “hackerish” culture. I think he’s only kinda right. Here are my quick tumblr-sized thoughts.
First: Yahoo remains one of the most heavily visited internet sites in the universe, so every critique of Yahoo ought to start out...

Scoble's Idea Can Save Twitter Too
Everything Scoble said about Sun or Microsoft helping Zooomr for free to help evangelize their own platform goes triple for Twitter.
If I were working at Microsoft or at Sun I’d be flying a team to Zooomr to help them get back up and running. I’d also videotape everything, and make a big deal about how a startup survived due to these efforts.
